FAQ
What is Argentium Silver?
Argentium Silver is a high-quality, tarnish-resistant silver alloy. It is composed of 93.5% pure silver (sterling silver is typically 92.5%, stamped .925) and 6.5% germanium, which enhances its durability and tarnish resistance. With its unique formulation, it is a naturally bright white, outshining even white gold, platinum and rhodium!
How does Argentium Silver compare to Sterling Silver?
- Tarnish Resistance: Argentium Silver is more tarnish-resistant than traditional sterling silver. It retains its bright white shine for longer periods, reducing the need for frequent polishing.
- Hypoallergenic: Argentium Silver is often a great choice for those with metal allergies as it contains no nickel.
- Durability: It is harder and more durable than sterling silver, making it less prone to scratching and damage.
- Easy Maintenance: Argentium Silver is low-maintenance, and it's often as simple as wiping it with a soft cloth to keep it looking its best.
Why do I use it?
It’s the sustainable and environmentally friendly choice as all of Argentium silver is certified recycled!
Unlike sterling, Argentium has the ability to fuse to itself, thus reducing the need for solder. Typical solder contains copper, zinc and tin. The solder often leaves unsightly joints that require clean up with abrasives.
Argentium silver is also firescale-free (also called firestain-free), meaning it cannot develop the dark surface oxide stains that sterling silver can. The presence of firescale in sterling is hard to remove; at times requiring hazardous chemicals both to eliminate the stain, but also to plate the piece to cover the stain.
Again, it contains no nickel and does not tarnish. It is hypoallergenic and does not leave discoloration on your skin.
These environmental and workplace concerns are just a few of the reasons why I have chosen to work almost exclusively in Argentium.
How should I take care of my Argentium Silver jewelry?
These pieces are made to be worn. I often wear mine for days at a time through all of life’s activities.
In the case of very humid weather that can cause light tarnish, we recommend polishing with a soft, lint-free cloth until the luster shines through.
In case you took a dip in a sulphur rich hot spring and the piece developed a patina, I recommend a Sunshine cloth.
